After a while we decided not to look ahead, but instead to focus on the countryside scenery and grazing livestock along the roads: Livestock compete with vehicles… …or just stop to munch for a while Lake Nakuru National Parkįour hours later, with cameras ready and excitement building, we arrived at our first game drive at Lake Nakuru National Park. Overtaking is more of a game of life on the road, and it’s nothing short of controlled chaos. Busses, motorcycles, vans and Safari jeeps all jockeyed to get ahead. We watched Benson skillfully navigate 2-way streets that morphed into 6-way roads in heavy traffic. As I mentioned previously, Kenyans drive on the left-hand side of the road in right-hand drive vehicles, and it took us a while to get used to it. We headed out of Nairobi and our introduction to Kenyan driving began. These vehicles are incredibly tough to handle what they are put through With those rules out of the way, Benson promised that we would have the most exciting and memorable experience of our lives! Our safari transport was a modified 6-seater Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4 with a pop-up roof so we could stand up when viewing and photographing wildlife. The seating locations in the vehicle alternated daily, and we were to remain inside the vehicle at all times during the game drives. Ladies must be prepared to squat in any wash rooms other than at hotels. ![]() ![]() We should also be prepared for an “African back massage” during our hours of driving on brutally rough, bumpy and dusty roads. We were informed that plastic bags are illegal in Kenya (yup, this was announced while we were still on the plane), and tap water should only be used for hand-washing and showers (bottled water for drinking and tooth-brushing). Upon departure from the hotel, our driver/guide/wildlife expert Benson briefed us on what to expect during our multi-day trip. ![]()
